New joiner FAQ

Thinking of playing with us? Whether you have been playing for decades or recently picked up your first set of clubs, Rainbow Golfers Sussex offers an inclusive, relaxed, and welcoming environment for LGBT+ golfers across the county. Here are answers to the most common questions from new joiners.

Everything you need to know

We want you to feel confident and excited about your first outing. Browse our frequently asked questions below to find out how our rounds work, what to bring, and how to get involved.

Do I need an official handicap to join?

No, an official World Handicap System (WHS) handicap is not required to join our social rounds. If you already have a handicap, you can use it for friendly competitions. If you do not have one, we can help you track your scores and establish a casual playing index within the group.

What level of golf experience is required?

We welcome players of all abilities. All we ask is that you are familiar with basic course etiquette and can comfortably keep up with the pace of play. If you are a beginner, we often pair you with supportive, experienced members who can guide you round the course.

What is the dress code for events?

Dress requirements depend on the specific golf club we are visiting, but standard golf attire is typically expected. This usually means a collared polo shirt, tailored trousers or shorts, and golf shoes with soft spikes. We always share course-specific guidelines ahead of each fixture.

What happens on my very first round?

Before tee-off, we meet at the clubhouse for a friendly coffee and introduction. You will be paired with welcoming group regulars who will show you the ropes. After the 18 holes, we gather on the 19th hole for drinks, a bite to eat, and a relaxed social chat.

Do you organise social events off the course?

Yes! In addition to regular weekend fixtures and 9-hole twilight rounds, we arrange social dinners, driving range evenings, and seasonal get-togethers throughout Sussex so members can connect away from the greens.

Can I come along to try an event before committing?

Absolutely. You are welcome to attend a round as a guest before deciding to register as a full member. It is the best way to meet the group, experience our inclusive culture, and see if our community fits your game.

Where across Sussex do you usually play?

We rotate across a variety of scenic parkland and downland courses throughout East and West Sussex. Venues are selected to provide great value, accessible facilities, and a warm welcome for diverse golfers.

How do I sign up for my first fixture?
